GhostBook I had the germ of an idea for a story a couple of years ago, and the Covid lockdown of 2020 gave me the perfect opportunity to try it out.
GhostBook is not a ghost story... Think social media for dead people. Now you are getting there. Not actual dead people, that would be ghosts wouldn’t it?
Tess and Mark are a typical couple, slightly arty, who live in York, England. The story tells how they pilot their way through a year when those around them seem preoccupied with making sure that they each have the perfect social media package in place for when it is their turn to bite the dust. Coffee and cake are involved. And wine.
Throughout the year, Tess and Mark are constantly weighing up the GhostBook app and the moral dilemmas it raises, deciding whether they should sign up and, if they do, what messages they might leave for their family and friends. Are they obsessed? No. Half-hearted at best.
Through a series of coincidences and chance encounters they find their lives entwined with others who have already signed up for GhostBook, and hints of darker deeds suggest that some who have yet to decide should sign up sooner rather than later!
GhostBook is a contemporary story about people and family, the passing of time and history. And dead people. Dark and funny, it takes a droll swipe at how the social media world might want to get involved with death and dying. And make a profit. It is a story told with a wry humour, irony and, some might say, sarcasm.
GhostBook is published in paperback in a first run of 100 copies. Email me if you need to know how to obtain a copy.
